The Bait

Writer's picture: NightMareNightMare

In 1984 on a sunny, brisk June afternoon, I bought worms from the local bait store and took them to the lake to be released to the fish. Putting a worm on a hook has never been one of my favorite tasks to complete in the art of fishing, so why not lure the fish in closer to the shore with live bait...chumming the waters, so to speak.

The earth is rumbling beneath our feet. Whether due to fracking, deep pit mining, or Mother Earth shifting around a bit, it's talking, and the powers that be are not listening.

One of my favorite horsemen has a story he tells of being on a horse that is about to explode. People get into trouble when they try to contain a horse that is looking for any way out of a bad deal. Often times they are completely unaware of the explosion and wreck that is about to occur. Not a matter of if, but when. Imagine sitting on top of Old Faithful* in Yellowstone National Park. If you knew nothing about Old Faithful, you would be oblivious to the hot gushing geyser water that is about to blast your skeleton out of your skin in approximately 44 minutes. Not a matter of if, but when.

*Do not, under any circumstances, sit on top of Old Faithful. If you do, you are a fucking idiot and deserve to have your skeleton blasted out of your skin.

With the ability to listen, gain knowledge, and feel, it is possible to prevent your skeleton from being blasted out of your skin.

Same thing goes for horses. Horses will tell you exactly what you need to know if you have the ability to listen. Most wrecks involving horses are preventable. All a person has to do is think about what happened before what happened, happened. Learn from it, adjust, and start over. Otherwise, you are just practicing the art of insanity. A horse will tell you it has had enough. The energy that builds beneath your seat, the tail swishing, the ears pinned back, the side-eye, a nostril crinkled, a lip curled, a slight change in cadence. It's there and if you don't listen, you will be wondering what happened as you sail through the air before being abruptly connected with the earth.

Horses don't lie, but will bait you like people. Ever tried to catch a horse in an open field that doesn't want to get caught? If a horse is feeling sassy, good luck catching it. Just as you get up close, they will stick their tail in the air, kick up their heels, and fart as they run away. Then, let you get up close and do it all again, over and over and over until it is no longer a game for them. Kacey Musgraves got it right, "when a horse wants to run, ain't no sense in closing the gate."

It's a crazy, scary, beautiful day today. The Domestic Terrorist in Chief is actively committing hate crimes and inciting violence against his own fellow citizens out of fear, hate, and greed. The powers that be (old, wrinkly, pedophile, racist men) are flexing the only muscles they have, muscle bought and supplied with militarized weaponry. The bravery and sense of integrity that oozes from their pores is palpable as they whine and cry about human capital and loss of property.

My adopted grandmother, who LOVES the president, is in the hospital. Not a place anyone wants to be any day let alone when there is a global pandemic. Family dysfunction that has been simmering and coalescing is boiling over, I'm over 1,000 miles away, and all I can do is offer support and words. Words of encouragement, words of guidance, words to talk people off the edge, words to bait, words to hurt, words to soothe, words to dig, words to mend, I get tired of words.

Baiting with words I have mastered and burned with my words I have been. So, in a time when the earth is rumbling, cities are on fire, monkeys are stealing virus samples from labs, the powers that be better start choosing their words a bit better than they have been. The blinding racism upon which this government was built by stealing the land under an illusion of racial superiority is like a beacon of hypocrisy for the universe at the moment.

Don't ever forget you are standing on stolen land. The Native Genocide isn't over and our brothers and sisters whose ancestors were pillaged, raped, and sold as "human capital" need help.

Let's see who takes the bait.
